Varian Cleanup Update

Varian medical systems hired Jacobs Solutions, a national engineering company with offices in Boston, to oversee the cleanup operations at the contaminated site on Sohier Road. The remediation efforts proposed by Jacobs Solutions include:
- Heating the contaminated soil to vaporize the toxic chemicals
- Building an underground barrier along part of Tozer Road to stop chemicals from seeping into the neighboring residential areas
- Setting reactive core mats on the banks of adjacent streams
The renewed cleanup efforts come after Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) determined that Varian was not in compliance with state environmental regulations.
