Varian Cleanup Update

After considering 20 possible remediation technologies to clean the contaminated site at 150 Sohier Road, Varian Medical Systems unveiled a multipronged clean up strategy at a January 24th public meeting. Please see a summary of the clean-up strategy below:

  • Thermal radiation at building 3 (forcing the contamination to be vaporized, extracted, treated and removed from the site)
  • Install reactive core mats along of a portion of the stream adjacent to the Sonning Road neighborhood, Shore Country Day School, and Beverly High School. The mats are designed to filter chemicals that are seeping into the stream
  • Install underground permeable reactive barriers that catch and treat the contaminants as they migrate from the Varian property
  • Continue injecting bioremediation, chemical oxidation treatments, and soil vapor extraction

MassDEP set a deadline of February 18, 2024, for Varian Medical Systems to finish the toxic chemical cleanup. Updates will be posted on the NSR blog.
