Varian Clean-Up Plans for Contaminated Site
December 19th at 12:53pm.
Varian Medical Systems provided cost estimates of a variety of treatment plans in its most recent filing with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). Please see a list of remedial technologies available to address the underground toxic chemicals found on the property:
- Groundwater Pump and Treatment
- Soil Excavation
- Air Sparging
- Multi-Phase Extraction
- Soil Vapor Extraction
- Engineered Wetlands/Phytoremediation
- Steam Enhanced Extraction
- Electric Resistance Heat
- Thermal Conductive Heat
The treatment cost for each remedial technique varies, with the highest estimated cost projected to be $34 million. MassDEP set a deadline of February 18, 2024, for Varian Medical Systems to finish the toxic chemical cleanup. Representatives from Varian say this date is not feasible, and the shortest timeline to complete the remediation project is 49 months.
Varian is scheduled to hold a public meeting on January 24th to present the proposed clean-up methods and receive public comments.
