Salem Regular Council ADU Ordinance Vote

The Salem City Council held its regular meeting on Thursday, January 26th to vote on proposed changes to the existing ADU ordinance. Please see the voting results below:
- Clarify that the requirement for stairways to ADUs above the first floor must be located on the rear side of the building applies only to exterior stairways (10-0 in favor)
- Remove the bedroom restriction (10-0 in favor)
- Maintain single-meter utilities, with the exception for water (10-0 in favor)
- Allow new detached ADUs (10-0 in favor)
- Remove the owner occupancy requirement (9-1 in opposed)
Councilors previously voted 5-4 in favor of removing the owner occupancy requirement at the City Council of the Whole meeting, where City Councilor Lev McClain was absent.
In addition, the Council discussed refiling a home rule petition related to their proposed Condominium Conversion Ordinance (see related articles below for more information).
