Peabody has launched the Abandoned Housing Initiative, a community revitalization program that aims to fix abandoned properties in the city. Announced by Mayor Ted Bettencourt, the Abandoned Housing Initiative will assign abandoned homes that have fallen into disrepair to court appointed third-party receivers.
The receivers will assume full responsibility for the property and will pay the associated costs needed to bring the property up to code. Homes enter the receivership process only after the property owner or lender has said they are unable or unwilling to fix the building or have repeatedly ignored notices from the city.
There are two properties that are currently undergoing the receivership process in Peabody:
Multifamily House at 16 Warren St
Singe Family House at 12 Samoset Road
Rather than working with the Attorney General’s office as the city did previously in 2013, Peabody will instead use outside counsel. Updates will be posted to the NSR blog.
