Citizens of Danvers, including NSR town monitor Dan Bennett, are working to collect the required 1,100 signatures for a petition that would place the acceptance of the Community Preservation Act (CPA) on the ballot for the May 2, 2023, town election.
If approved, Danvers residents would have a 1% surcharge on their property taxes. Tax revenue collected from this surcharge would fund affordable housing, historic preservation, open space, and recreation projects. State grants would match 40% of funds raised from CPA.
Based on last year’s property values, a 1% surcharge in FY 2022 would have generated $841,852 in local CPA funds for Danvers, plus an additional $331,437 in state funds, for a total of $1.173 million. The tax would have cost the average taxpayer in Danvers approximately $68 annually.
Residents interested in signing the petition may do so at Tapley Memorial Hall on Page Street between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Signatures must be submitted by March 1, 2023.
