NSAR and HCP to Offer First-Time Homebuyer Courses on the North Shore

Beverly, MA – An exciting partnership between the North Shore Association of REALTORS® and Harborlight Community Partners of Beverly will open up new avenues to home ownership for MA first-time homebuyers. A new first-time homebuyer course offered by the collaborating agencies is open to all potential first-time homebuyers, will be offered quarterly, and is especially focused on supporting buyers of moderate incomes. Courses are MassHousing-approved and will not only assist first-time homebuyers at any income level, but completion of the course will qualify eligible participants for MassHousing and HUD lending programs. The first course is to be offered in March.

Together, NSAR and Harborlight Community Partners seek to pave a path toward home ownership by offering a course that fosters a full understanding of costs, requirements, rights, and responsibilities of home buying and ownership.

Susan Kline, Chief Executive Officer of NSAR, states, "We are very excited to bring this program to the community, something we have wanted to do for many years. It is a curriculum we developed carefully and thoughtfully to best inform potential buyers as they enter the real estate market".

Graduates of this course will receive a certificate (accepted state-wide for first-time homebuyer education) allowing access to the Mass Housing partnership’s ONE Mortgage, MassHousing mortgages, HUD mortgages, home ownership lotteries, lender first-time homebuyer mortgages, and a variety of other mortgages through assisted and conventional lending sources.

Andrew DeFranza, Executive Director of Harborlight Community Partners, states, "HCP has long been committed to affordable housing needs and housing access across the region. This first-time homebuyer course is part of that vital continuum that works to open doors for our neighbors at all income levels".

The two day course will be offered at the NSAR headquarters in Beverly, MA (398 Essex Street, convenient to Route 128) at the cost of $45 for an individual or $75 per household beginning March 17th & 18th. NSAR and its panel of experts will review a variety of topics such as how to know when you’re ready to buy, understanding credit, choosing a home and negotiating the contract, home inspections, the mortgage application process, and more. Harborlight Community Partners, an affordable housing manager and developer, will provide homebuyer counseling for course attendees. The overall goals of the course are to help first-time buyers achieve home ownership and provide the tools and knowledge needed for long-term homeowner success.
